Deep cleaning my gas grill?

my puppy ate the grill cover this spring and we just didn't get around to replacing it. Last night when I opened up the grill, I noticed that there is now fluffy dog hair inside the grill (grates, burner, and basin) sticking to the grease! ACK! (I know, gross, right?) How do i thoroughly clean the grill to get rid of it all?And what about the ash/dog hair combo in the basin? Which products or methods should i use to remove these things? Thank you for all serious responses.

I'm pretty sure I can just take out the guts and just cover the hole in the bottom. What can I cover it with? A friend told me that tin wouldn't work. He suggested a steel plate, but I don't know where to get a steel plate.

Any other ideas? Or would I just be better off buying a charcoal grill?

What are the risks of leaving it out (I have a cover)? I plan on using it into the early winter and I don't have much storage inside.

    Thanks-
